What Requests Should Be Made Before Starting Excavation Work?

Your planning starts the moment you have a project in mind or receive a request to carry out excavation work.

Info-Excavation offers two types of requests:

1 - Plan Request

This type of request provides a map of underground networks for planning and design purposes only. It must never be used as permission to dig.

2 - Locate Request

Once your locate request is submitted, you’ll receive a map or a technician will mark the ground. You can then use the information provided by the utility owners to proceed with your work.

You’ll also need to plan for the type of machinery that best suits your needs and gets the job done efficiently.

Information Required to Submit a Locate Request

Once you’ve completed the first two steps, it’s time to submit your locate request. Here are a few key details you’ll need to include:

  • The depth of the excavation
  • The start and end dates of the work

These two elements define the validity period of your request. Once the end date has passed, the request expires—and you’ll need to submit a new one.

A Locate Request in 3 Simple Steps

  1. Go to www.info-ex.com.
  2. Fill out the locate request form.
  3. Once your request is submitted, utility owners operating in your work area—such as Bell, Énergir, or Hydro-Québec—have three business days to respond and indicate the location of their infrastructure.

Please note that there may be no utility owners present in your work zone. If this is the case, a message will be included in the confirmation of your request.

It’s also important to understand that not all municipalities are members of Info-Excavation. If your municipality is not listed, you will need to contact them directly.

What Are the Possible Responses?

It’s important to wait for a response from all utility owners present in your work zone before starting any excavation.

Possible responses found in the request confirmation or the locate report include:

  • No members present
  • Network nearby, but not within the work zone (clearance)
  • Network within the zone, but belonging to a third party (third-party conduit)
  • Network within the zone and located on-site (locate report)

Info-Excavation also provides free tools to help you implement and use safe excavation techniques. Learn more at info-ex.com.
